H Street Main Street Applauds DDOT and the DC Streetcar Team for Their Commitment to Community Engagement
Washington, DC—Anwar Saleem, Executive Director of H Street Main Street, sent a letter to Terry Bellamy, Director of the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT), and the DC Streetcar Team earlier this week to applaud them for their continued efforts to engage with H Street businesses and residents and update them on construction impacts and future operations of DC Streetcar. The letter comes after DDOT and the DC Streetcar Team hosted a Business Focus Group Meeting last week for community stakeholders. This was the second forum hosted by the agency in the last month to allow businesses and residents to ask questions, voice their concerns and give suggestions for future planning for the corridor and construction of the streetcar line set to open in December. DDOT has held regular outreach events with the H Street community since 2011.
“We’re very pleased that the city has continued its commitment to keeping us informed and engaging with our community as they continue construction of the streetcar line and plan future corridor improvement projects,” said Anwar Saleem, Executive Director of H Street Main Street. “By taking input from local stakeholders and businesses, the city is ensuring they proceed in the most efficient and least disruptive way possible.”
The letter also thanked the DC Streetcar team for their support earlier this year when H Street Main Street was presented with a Great American Main Street Award and congratulated them for their recent grant from the US Department of Transportation.
“By working together there is no limit to what the city and our community can accomplish,” said Saleem. “We look forward to continuing this fruitful partnership and are excited to see what the future holds for H Street NE.”
Text of the letter is below:
Dear Director Bellamy and the DC Streetcar Team,
On behalf of H Street Main Street and the businesses we support, I would like to thank you for hosting a Business Focus Group Meeting on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at the H Street Country Club. This meeting represented the second time the District of Columbia Department of Transportation and the DC Streetcar Team have engaged businesses along our corridor in the past month to update us on construction impacts and future operations of DC Streetcar. You provided a forum for business stakeholders to communicate their questions and concerns, as well as document them for consideration in future planning for the corridor. Representatives from DDOT gave a detailed overview of the agency’s citywide efforts are to coordinate and manage increasing freight and delivery needs for our growing city. This enhances the ongoing engagement that the DC Streetcar Communications Team has conducted with businesses and residents along our corridor for the past two years.
Congratulations to your team for being awarded a federal grant through the US Department of Transportation. By providing incentives to businesses who schedule truck deliveries outside of peak and rush hours, your agency will help to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality by reducing concentrations of diesel fuel emissions, and create a more sustainable and livable city.
H Street Main Street received the Great American Main Streets Award this past summer and we were pleased to have DDOT and DC Streetcar representatives present to applaud our success. In turn, we applaud your efforts to improve our city’s infrastructure and provide public transportation options for our city. We are in complete support of DC Streetcar and look forward to the unveiling of the first line in fifty years, this coming December.
I hope the DDOT will continue to innovate ways to involve our young people in the economic development and planning efforts of this city through your internship programs, apprenticeship programs, and eventually the completion of the Car Barn Training Center. Thank you for your welcomed dialogue as we move forward with ideas on ways to work together.
